Magnolia Gardens, SC has many trails into the wild side, and this yellow crowned night heron in nuptial plumage was engaged in a courtship ritual with it’s new mate. Herons by nature are solitary birds, and their natural aggression towards others has to be calmed enough to allow pairing up and mating. The two birds would flare up and spar briefly with each other, with feathers raised in a threatening gesture as shown here; then the male would gently stroke his mate’s back and neck with his beak, and she would start arranging the same solitary stick over and over in various positions as if she were building a nest. Then they would flare up all over again and repeat the entire process. This went on for hours, and I shot tons of film of them. What an aerial ballet they performed, oblivious to all who might have been watching. $125.00
